I was wondering how often should a 4 year old girl get her hair washed? My step daughter is black and there are times that a whole month passes by when her mom doesn't wash her hair. I have started washing it every time we get the step kids (every other weekend). So this means she gets her hair washed twice a month now. Is this ok? or should it be more or less. No racist comments please!!!

She should probably wash it every other or every day. Kid's can get away with washing their hair less than grown ups, but not much less. I guess it would depend on how greasy her hair is too, if it's dry don't wash it as much, but always wash it when it feels greasy. Is she taking baths? Even if she doesn't wash her hair every time she should definitely take baths every other if not every day.

Twice a month is ok. Use a conditioner everytime if she has dry brittle hair and use hair products specific for Black hair.

You don't need to wash your hair every day. It dries out the natural oils. Your stepdaughter should have her hair washed at least every other day. That her mother doesn't wash her hair at all is nothing short of neglect.
Question for black women (and others)?
because of her ethnicity, i'm not quite sure. however, i do have a few black friends who sport hairstyle such as cornrows and they say they don't wash their hair then, so i guess she doesn't need to have it washed much.
Question for black women (and others)?
A month is far too long, it should be about weekly.
It's normal for someone with no experience to not have a clue about natural ethnic hair. It has to be cared for a bit differently...because it's so dry and brittle, it can't be washed as often as ours. Many people need to put oil on their scalp, and oil sheens help keep the hair feeling softer and makes it shinier. Deep conditioners are good for the dryness.
Her father should at least know how to care for her hair, unless the child is actually biracial.
When the girl has buildup on her scalp or dirt or flakes in her hair, it definitely is time to wash. Make sure you always use a good conditioner (buy some products by Motions or Mizani, and I'm hearing a lot about Pink as well) because they're more targeted for ethnic hair. Don't blow dry her hair unless you have to for a style, it dries it out unnecessarily.
Question for black women (and others)?
Honestly I think once a week is perfect..if her hair doesnt get greasy easy...mine dont get greasy easy and i only wash mine once a week...it actually smells and feels clean for even longer then that.....and over washing hair is bad...once a week is good...2-3 times a week if her hair gets oils fast.

I come from South Africa, but I love the African people, and class myself as African. I was born there.
It can be washed every day, and conditioner makes it more manageable, so while she is with you try to do that.
Maybe that will help her understand, that as she gets older, she can wash it more than her mom does. But don't tell her, her mom is wrong.
Otherwise there is not much you can do. but you are doing your part. Sound like you ar a great step mom.

If you choose to wash her hair every day, or every other day - be prepared to condition. IC has a good leave in conditioner but not always easy to find. A thick(not liquid) leave in conditioner is a good shortcut around our conditioning process which is using heat (like a heating cap) to penetrate the hair strands, thus making it more manageable.
Some folks say that Carol's Daughter (hair products)is a must without the harsh chemicals but I recently read on a blog that since they got celebrity endorsements (Brangelina, Jada Pinkett, Oprah), the product is not the same and customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Plus, its pricey. If you live in a large city, your Black beauty supply would be your best resource or most Target stores carry Optimum or Motions products. The ones with Afrocentric packaging are mostly hype, they are usually watered down and do nothing to ease Black hair manageability. Also, brushes with firm (not hard-ouch!) are good for even distribution of oils and feels good to the scalp. I grew up with Goody brushes and use a wide tooth comb. A dryer(at least 1600 watts) with a wide tooth comb attachment is good as well.
Every other week is normal for Black hair because our hair is dry and tends to not attract dirt and/or oil as quickly as those of other nationalities.
Question for black women (and others)?
believe it or not she can go month without getting her hair washed., as long as it doesn't smell. I am black and our hair does not need to be washed more than one a week. IN the winter I will wash it once every other week. No it is not gross. too much washing dries out and damages our hair. If I have braids or extension then I definitely only may wash it once a month. Once again as long as it doesn't smell one month is fine. never went longer than that.
Question for black women (and others)?
black people need to wash their hair at least once a week with kids they need to have their hair washed every other week so it is okay having her hair washed twice a month the hotter it is the more often it needs to be washed though
Question for black women (and others)?
it depends on her hair. When i was young i could only wash my hair a 2-3 times a month and my hair was healthy but as i got older and more active i had to wash it more. As long as her hair is healthy twice a month is great
