Why does nobody ever have anything to say to you until you pick up the phone?

My husband and kids will be quiet as can be- but the minute I pick up the phone to talk to a friend or family member (usually long distance) all of a sudden they each have a million things to tell me or they can't find their favorite shirt or someones pulling someone's hair and pretty soon the kids are fighting and my husband has gone outside to have a smoke..

Does this happen to anyone else?

Yep. Is this an emergency? Then can't it wait when I'm not on the phone. Not an emergency %26amp; continues, I had to tell the phone person I would call back. The spanking starts. There was no 3rd or 4th time after that unless it was something that could not wait.

It is for attention.

LOL, I think that's par for the course for most families...at least it was for mine growing up. Sometimes I think my brothers and I did it to be annoying, but I'm pretty sure my dad still does it to my mom because...well, because it's par for the course for most families. It's like the missing sock phenomenon. It can't be explained, only tolerated. :)
