Stay away from Labs and Goldens. Shed A LOT. Boxers are not too big and shed just a little. They also make great pets for kids, not to mention good gaurdians. How about a mini-goldendoodle or mini-labradoodle. Just ensure it is 75% poodle or it can shed a lot as well. Standard Schnauzer are med-size dogs and shed little to no fur. Good strong dogs for kids and again a good watch dog.
