In my state, over 100 children have been killed, accidentally or otherwise, by foster parents, and thousands of children abused. CPS has unlimited rights: all it takes is a vengeful neighbor to say your kid went to school with messy hair, and these people are in your life, threating to take your kids. My sister is on a legal painkiller, was never a "junkie" she accidentally got pregnant, and is now terrified she will lose her kids because she didn't have an abortion. In my state, kids get taken away from GOOD FAMILIES, who might not have a lot of money or a perfect house, because they are NOT perfect. The kids get placed in foster care. Have you ever known a foster parent to set up a trust fund or college account, or do they more frequently just collect a welfare check on the child? People like to believe that kids who get snatched from their parents are being raped or beaten, but CPS can open a case even if the school calls because a busy mom was ten minutes late picking the child up

You sound as though you don't like them because of your sister, maybe you should take a closer look at your family. Why not ask someone working there what it is like? They are given tons of cases, and a finite amount of time to do anything. Blaming them for kids getting hurt is a waste of time, why not blame the person that hurt them to begin with? If there were more personal responsibility in the world and good parents, CPS wouldn't be needed as much. They do not have unlimited power, they have to answer to a judge for everything. Next time please do better research before posting such a judgmental opinion based on your family experience. I hope your sister learns from this, taking painkillers while pregnant is not a good idea, and the doctor is a mandated reporter. A child cannot be removed for being poor, and callers that make vengeful calls as you put it can be prosecuted, this question is not based on FACT, but on OPINION....they are not perfect, but, are you?

In my state CPS usually has their hands too tied to do as much as is necesary to properly protect kids. They are underfunded and understaffed. Stop ranting and become a decent foster parent if you care this much.

CPS has an impossible job. If they wait until circumstances are dire, kids suffer terribly or die with abusive parents. If they don't, and try to intervene early, they upset people like you, and likely occasionally end up placing a child in worse circumstances than they started out in. It isn't possible for anyone to take your child away because they went to school with messy hair (trust me, I'd be out 4 kids). Would you rather not have CPS and have there be nothing you can do if the kid who lives next door is being beaten or starved? Yes, there should be oversight (in fact there is -- but perhaps there should be more. often there are funding problems -- the caseload of CPS workers is often way way too high for them to do a good job, for which you can blame the legislators and the people who don't want to pay enough taxes to fund a better job).
It's hard to understand why you're so upset. As I and others have said, if your sister is was on prescription drugs when she got pregnant and has been following doctor's orders ever since, there's no way CPS is going to give her a hard time, beyond perhaps a perfunctory inquiry (don't you want somebody checking in on families if babies are born with methadone in their system?? your sister sounds like a special case, but generally babies in that situation are going to need a lot of help). Has CPS already threatened to take the child away? Is there something else that makes the situation more complicated?
Has Child Protective Services caused harm in your state?
oh boy YES Yes and Yes!
My husband and I have called CPS on our adopted daughter for the behavior she was doing in our home. In the beggining we asked to have her removed and they would not do it. They stated they put families back together not take them apart.
Our daughter after calling cps and trying to get help for her they still left her with us and she almost killed our son and was caught sexually assaulting our other daughter. They still did nothing. I feel they are here for a no good reason. There are families out there crying for help yet they leave these children in homes to hurt other kids. They are not held liable for anything that happens to these kids. I really have nothing nice to say about them.
After all is said and done our daughter no longer lives with us but we had to make it happen which ment she atyed with us for several more months with alarms on doors and all, just to keep our children safe from her. Social workers than came to our house and appologised for there behalf and that was after recieving a letter from her docs stating she can not be in a home with other children and that he knew they were not doing there job right becouse of the laws that state they are not liable for what happens to these kids.
I would tell your sister not worry. She could keep the baby and raise it the best she knows how. Normally getting your children removed from your home is the last resort. They will normally do other interventions before removing your children. Good luck to her and your family!

CFS (Canada) is very unfair here too. I know a couple of moms who aren't that good of moms. They aren't focusing on the ones who are more in need of having their kids taken away. Some do drugs %26amp; still have their kids ! Someone told me bout how this one girl had a baby, left her baby in the play pen all day, %26amp; went to get high in the basement ! If it wasn't for him saying not to do that stuff upstairs she would have done it right in front of him. He didn't learn how to walk, let alone crawl... cuz he was alwayz in his play pen ! How come she still (as far I know) has her kid ?

I will say this as a person who is trying to be a foster parent you don't receive that much for the child. i work and my wife stays home with our child. The money is like twenty dollars a day it is a remibursment. I know i spend more than that on my child and will do the same for the foster child. No i won't start a college fund because they are only in my house temporaly while the birth parent does what CPS has them do to get their kids back and if they don't in a year the state takes custody.
As for taking kids for messy hair that is crazy. In my state they try thier hardest to keep kids home as long as possible. Two when kids get taken they try to place with family first and if the birth parent looses custody they try again for family to adopt. They use the family centered approach and try to keep kids out of the system. It was my understanding that was the model that most states are following now.
The doctor is a mandated reporter and if he did not call CPS and your sis lost the baby or it was born addictied and he knew he could loose his license. She may not want to but an abortion was and is probbally the best thing. The child will be born with delays or very sick. He had no choice to call and CPS had no choice but to take her kids. Yes she is not a druggie but she did not make the best choice.

well i agree that they need more training, and funding, but
I can't agree that they are all bad,
I mean you did get yourself into this, why not try and get yourself OUT.

Yes CPS has caused harm in my state, yet I still say Thank You for being there. We had a little girl get murdered upon the return to her bio mother this month, the foster mother warned this would happen, but as is the case, family, family, family...
I would like to understand how you think painkillers would harm the fetus I mean once she Knew she was preg. there are reasonable steps to take,I know because I injured my shoulder and found out I was preg. the same day yet I was able to with in reason take medication, so I was able to function with a degree of relief. (typing even hurts my arm). My daughter was not born addicted nor with with any measurable amount of narcotics in her system.
There are flaws yet you the baby's family would be first choice for placement like others have said before me.
My foster mother gave more than a college fund during the scant year I was with her and my foster father they shared a different life one I carry with me today, that each day is good.
The system is overrun everywhere, due to lack of proper funding. In the case of messed up hair, here the only way would be a rats nest with lice and that would only happen after three notes home and several home visits.
Then maybe removal.
Also I had a plumber call on me because my dishes were not washed, my shopping was on my daughters table and you could see the wires for my computer, not joking. The irony is he removed the drain catch and left saying he would be back the next day, after he left I had put a bucket under the hole washed the dishes which cleared the space to put up the food and thus my daughters table,CPS Phoned and came right out, she laughed said he should have helped not called,
however I am glad they are there for him to call, he didn't know about my arm that was/is a resourse for ppl that don't know what else to do, I'm sure it getts abused, what good thing doesn't?
Maybe this is a calling since you are worried for these children, become a foster-parent and return the stipend.
Vote for better support and paid education for these civil servants.

A lot of stupid charges get into the CPS system, but the good news is that most of these marginal charges get dropped. Mine was dropped. I know what you mean about reputation in a community, though. CPS workers talk to a lot of people about you, and although your records are "private" rather than public, the word does get around! I got treated like dirt for a while. But the stigma does die down.
Usually if your doctor vouches for you, the CPS will leave you alone. I wouldn't worry about it.
